J Acerola (Malpighia glabra) is a fruit resembling the bing cherry that is believed to originate from the Yucatan peninsula in South America. Some of the largest plantings in modern times are in Brazil. It is one of the richest known food sources of vitamin C, and it is for this reason that this fruit has played an important role in South American herbal medicine.
